Your first BJJ lesson

Congratulations! The most important step has already been taken: you have decided to take part in your first BJJ session. But what can you expect? How can you prepare and what do you need? These are the questions we get asked frequently.

The good news first! There are few sports where you need as little as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Grappling. If you still want to prepare something, this page will help you.

How do I need to prepare?

Not at all! Of course, we are available to teach you all the content in training. No prior knowledge is required. However, if you would like to learn more about the sport beforehand, I recommend watching a beginner's video on YouTube that explains the basic positions. This will prepare you well for the first sessions!

What do I have to bring?

For your first lesson, whether in Gi or Nogi, you only need some training clothes (ideally, a not too baggy cut without pockets), flip-flops and something to drink (please avoid glass bottles). We train barefoot, so your equipment is already complete. Since this is a contact sport and we want to avoid infectious diseases and injuries, please pay attention to appropriate personal hygiene. Particularly long fingernails or toenails pose a risk of injury."

How does a training session work?

The training session begins with a short greeting. This is usually followed by a short warm-up program to ensure that all participants are up to speed. As soon as this is the case, the technique moves on. The coach shows the first techniques and exercises, which are later practiced ("drilled") with a partner. The first techniques learned are often followed by sparring rounds ("rolls") at the end. Don't worry - especially during your first session, the coach will make sure to find suitable training partners for you. You usually start with "position sparring", where the goal is to apply the practiced techniques in a more realistic scenario.

Mindset

Don't worry about your performance and don't compare yourself to others! Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a complex sport with a variety of techniques. The learning process is more like a marathon than a sprint. Even stars like Gordon Ryan and Roger Gracie had their first training session. Have fun training and be back on the mat for the next session!
